Form One gets Growing!

23rd April 24

We had a super afternoon at Aylett Nurseries this week. Our current topic in Science is Plants and we wanted to find out a little more about plants, so we decided to visit a garden centre. We chose to visit Aylett Nurseries, because it has a good selection of plants, shrubs, herbs, gardening equipment and much more.

We followed a photographic hunt around the garden centre, chatting about everything we could see. We picked up some Cress seeds from the seed section. We spotted they were in alphabetical order and quickly found the correct packet. We hope this will grow quickly in the classroom.

We then headed off to the herb section and enjoyed touching and smelling all of the herbs, including lemon balm, curry plant, thyme and rosemary. We wanted to buy a basil plant, but discovered we were too early for basil!  We bought a mint plant instead to use in a cooking activity later on in the term.

We went to look at the cactus section. We wanted to buy a Venus Flytrap to catch a few pesky flies in the classroom. We had researched them in our non-fiction books and knew they were carnivorous plants, who eat flies. We found them amongst the cacti and succulent plants. We are currently naming each of the little jaw-like traps and we can’t wait to see if it manages to catch any of the flies in the classroom!

The next day, we thought about the fruit and vegetable plants we saw at Aylett Nurseries. We discussed which parts of the plant we eat, researching information in books and using the internet. We sorted lots of fruit and vegetables from the story Oliver’s Vegetables into groups, including stem, flower, seeds, leaves and roots. We were excited to make our own salad to take home, cutting up the vegetables and herbs carefully. Next time you have a salad at home, have a think about which part of the plant you are eating!
