Nursery

What does our Nursery offer for 3 and 4 year olds?

Welcome to St Hilda’s Early Years Pre-Nursery and Nursery in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, where we provide exceptional care and learning for boys and girls aged two to three years in our Pre-Nursery ‘Puffins’ room and aged three to four years in our Nursery ‘Kittiwakes’ room. Highly experienced Early Years Practitioners provide exciting and innovative experiences, through a balance of adult-led and child-initiated learning, in exciting and vibrant indoor and outdoor environments, whilst taking account of each child’s individuality, prior experience and working together in partnership with their family. All these activities and experiences adhere to the principals of Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework and provide the children with a range of rich opportunities that support the children to achieve secure development in all the seven areas of learning. In our ‘Puffins’ Pre-Nursery room we focus on the ‘Prime’ areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage, supporting the children to develop secure skills in ‘Communication and Language’, ‘Physical Development’ and ‘Personal, Social and Emotional Development’. These skills provide the foundation for future learning and allow access to the ‘Specific’ areas of development, including ‘Literacy’, ‘Maths’, Understanding the World’ and ‘Expressive Arts and Design’. Whilst experience of the Specific areas begins in Pre-Nursery, the learning and understanding is extended in our Nursery class where the children explore these themes in greater depth.

In the St Hilda’s Pre-Nursery and Nursery, we embrace the school motto and strive to support all our children to become ‘Caring, Curious and Confident’ learners. We teach our children the school values of being positive, independent, fearless, respectful, resilient, and kind. Whilst our curriculum is centred around the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework, we believe that it is important to provide an enriched curriculum that supports our children to develop these values, by learning to take care of their own wellbeing and mental health and to learn to respect and appreciate the world around them, both in their local community and in the wider world community.

Come Home to St Hilda's 🕊️
For 135 years, generations of girls have walked through St Hilda’s red doors, forming friendships, creating memories and becoming part of a community that lasts long after school days are over.
To celebrate this special milestone, we are delighted to invite our alumni community to our very first St Hilda’s School Alumni Event, taking place on Saturday 19th September from 2-5pm.
Whether you left St Hilda’s recently or many years ago, we hope you’ll join us to reconnect with former classmates, families and staff, rediscover the school, and celebrate the traditions that have made St Hilda’s such a special place for 135 years.
We can’t wait to welcome you back to your school.
