Form II Trip to The Tower of London 14th March 2024

18th March 24

On Thursday last week, Form II had a very exciting trip to the Tower of London!  We left school bright and early and arrived at the Tower in time for our workshop with Samuel Pepys’ maid, Jane.  We learnt all about how the Great Fire of London started, how it spread and what damage the fire did to the city.  Some of us were lucky enough to re enact parts of the story!

We then tucked into our tasty lunch, prepared by the kitchen staff at school.

Once we had finished lunch, we went to the see the Crown Jewels!  This was a very exciting part of the day and some of us travelled on the travellator three times, in order to take in all their glory!  We saw numerous crowns, made of gold, diamonds, rubies and sapphires.  We also saw some orbs and sceptres, some of which we recognised from our late Queen’s funeral and current King’s Coronation.  There were some beautiful robes on display too, together with some very fancy shoes and armlets.

After our journey through the jewels, we visited the main tower, called the White Tower.  We climbed 204 steps in total!  Just before we entered the tower, we were very entertained by some of the resident ravens!  They were enormous and had very long, sharp beaks.  Their wings were so wide when they opened them out fully!  In the White Tower we saw many suits of armour, some of which belonged to King Henry VIII.  We also saw some suits of armour that were tiny and would have fitted some of our little brothers and sisters!  We had great fun in the interactive area of the tower too.  Some of us enjoyed firing a pretend rifle!  We also had a go at designing towers that could last 1000 years on an interactive screen.  We had the chance to dress Henry VIII in his armour too!

After a very tiring but interesting day, we headed back to school on the coach.  Thank you to all of the helpers who came with us and made the day possible!
