Reception Assembly

15th March 24

Here at St Hilda’s School, Harpenden Reception took to the stage and took over assembly on Friday this week. The hall was full with all of the school plus our parents who had all come to watch us.  We began by introducing ourselves and welcoming everyone to our assembly. Rosalind explained that we have been learning all about cold places . We went on to talk about both the Arctic and the Antarctic and how they are the coldest places on Earth because they are far away from the sun. We showed our polar bear paintings before using our puppets to help us perform a poem called Little Polar Bear.

We told everybody some great facts about polar bears. Did you know that a polar bear has black skin? Or that an adult polar bear’s tongue is either blue, black or purple?

We then changed ourselves into penguins and told everyone about our favourite penguins. Some of our favourites are the King penguin, the Emperor penguin, the Little Blue penguin, the Macaroni penguin, the Fairy penguin and the Rockhopper penguin! We sang a song all about penguins on the ice and then after Sophia said a prayer we taught everybody a penguin dance. We were delighted to do an encore with the whole of the audience joining in. Even the Mummies and Daddies joined in!  Mrs Johnstone was super proud of our absolutely fabulous performance.

When we got back to the classroom we celebrated with a special treat.  Mrs Johnstone put some plain cupcakes, a bowl, some spoons and a box of icing sugar onto the table and asked us to guess what we were going to do! After some squeals of excitement the idea of making icing was formed. After a little more discussion about how to make the icing Emily suggested we add some water to the icing sugar. We carefully added a spoon of water at a time and each took a turn to stir it. We each iced and decorated a snow themed cupcake and ate it for our snack! They were yummy!
