STEM Workshop

Last week at St Hilda’s Forms III-VI were treated to an exciting and inspiring STEM workshop this week, delivered by Alex from Creative Hut and organised in partnership with Amazon Think Big Robotics.

The hands-on session brought science, technology, engineering, and maths to life, giving pupils the opportunity to explore real-world applications of STEM in a fun and engaging way. Alex led a series of interactive activities designed to spark curiosity, encourage problem-solving and build confidence in using technology creatively.

A highlight of the workshop was working with LEGO Education resources to design, build and programme a robot. Students collaborated in teams to construct their models, carefully following engineering principles to ensure their robots were stable and functional. They then used coding software to programme movements, testing and refining their designs to complete specific challenges. The excitement in the room was clear as robots successfully navigated tasks, with pupils proudly celebrating each success.

Throughout the workshop, students tackled challenges that required logical thinking, teamwork, and innovation. From debugging their code to redesigning parts of their robot for improved performance, they demonstrated resilience and determination. Alex encouraged pupils to see mistakes as part of the learning process, reinforcing the importance of perseverance in engineering and technology.

A key focus of the session was highlighting how STEM skills connect to future careers. By building and programming their own robots, students gained insight into fields such as robotics, software development and digital design. Alex shared examples of how these skills are used in industry, helping pupils to see the relevance of their learning beyond the classroom.

At St Hilda’s we are committed to providing enriching experiences that broaden horizons and inspire ambition. This workshop, made possible through the support of Creative Hut and Amazon Think Big Robotics, reflects the school’s ongoing dedication to promoting STEM education and empowering students to become confident, capable learners ready for the challenges of tomorrow
