Form One Website News Summer 2 2026
We have been busy bees in the last half-term in Form One. We can’t quite believe how quickly the year has flown by!
In English, Mrs Shuttleworth arranged for the amazing author Nizrana Farook to visit us. Nizrana has written five really famous books, including ‘The Girl who Stole an Elephant’. She was born in Sri Lanka, and based all of her books on native animals and her own experiences during her special childhood. We were fascinated by Nizrana’s stories and learnt so many new facts about animals. We were delighted to meet Nizrana again at the end of the day, when she brought some of her super books to give out.
In Science, we found out more about sunflower’s life cycle and how they grow each year. We then planted our own dwarf sunflower seeds, hoping they will grow into strong plants. Some of us joked that they also hoped they were ‘naughty seeds’ from the super story ‘The Bad Seed!’
In Mathematics, we have been learning about fractions and can now split a shape into halves and quarters, and we are working hard to work out half and quarter of an amount too. A very useful skill to have when sharing out treats at home! We have also been learning about time, focusing on o’clock and half past times. We were really clever and even used our knowledge of counting in steps of 5 to help us count around the clock!
In Art, we took time to add our super magnifying glasses and minibeasts onto our beautiful watercolour flower artwork, adding interest by making it 3 dimensional.
Also in Science, we really enjoyed finding out about dangerous plants, and plants we should look out for in parks and woods. We made clear posters in pairs, explaining what the plants look like and what dangers they pose to animals and humans. We will be steering clear of Giant Hogweed in the future!
In History, we enjoyed finding out about the Olympics and where the amazing games originated. We went on to learn about some brilliant Olympians who had won medals for their country. We were particularly inspired by Simone Biles and Sky Brown. Can you remember which sports were their specialism?
In Computing, we enjoyed finding out more about technology and Information Technology with Miss Smith. We went on a hunt around school to find out who was using technology. Can you recall any ways technology has made our lives easier at home?
In our Focused Show and Tell, we loved sharing all of the amazing gardening we have been doing at home. We have grown fruit, vegetables, planted fairy gardens, found out about seed dispersal, visited garden centres and so much more. We really are a green-fingered bunch!
In Art, we enjoyed finding out about Frida Kahlo’s life, the struggles she overcame and the super art work she produced from her bed. We were inspired by her artwork, so painted lots of pretty flowers and a super face portrait, and put them together to make our own portrait in the style of Frida Kahlo. We even turned Mrs Comer into Frida Kahlo for her leaving card!
We used our new watercolour painting skills to make a super front cover for our little ‘Magic Feather’ stories too. We loved feeling like real illustrators, as well as authors!
We were joined by Sienna, an ex-pupil of St Hilda’s, on her Work Experience. We loved working with her, sharing what we were doing, being helped by her and even having our stories read by her at the end of the day! Thank you for joining us Sienna.
In English, we enjoyed a visit to the Grove Theatre in Dunstable, to see the amazing Rachel Bright story ‘The Lion Inside’ come to life. We loved sharing the story and all of the other books in her series at the beginning of Form One, and can now read them all on our own.
We enjoyed showing off our super work with our families before Sports Day. We couldn’t believe how much we had done during the year!
We had the most wonderful Activity Week with our friends. We joined in with an amazing silk painting workshop with Mrs Fairbairn and the super dance workshop with Ellie, as well as the Mini Maths Market with Form VI, ice-creams from FOSH, House Games, including Sardines, Talent Show and Floor is Lava, and much more! We were so happy, and exhausted by the end!
Phew! What a term. We have worked so hard in Form One over the year, and it has flown by. Well done, girls. We are so proud of you all. Have a wonderful summer holiday with your families. See you in Form II in September!
