Happy Springtime everyone! We have enjoyed another packed half-term in Form One.

In Science, we enjoyed starting our new topic on ‘Plants’. We discussed what a plant is and then started to think about which parts of plants we eat. We loved watching ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ and seeing Oliver trying to work out where his beloved potatoes were. We looked at fruit and vegetables and quickly realised that we eat some stems, leaves, fruits, seeds and even roots!

We went on to delve a little more deeply into the parts of plants and what they are used for. We found out everything that plants need to grow and decided to test it out. We planted mustard seeds and put them in different conditions. We watched them over a few weeks, and discovered the seeds without any water couldn’t germinate, and the seeds in Mrs Bishop and Mrs Farrar’s drawer were yellow in colour and grew towards the light. Fascinating!

In English, we were delighted to meet a real author; Paula Harrison. We loved hearing how Paula’s brilliant Kitty books were based on her own black cat! We were inspired by the way Paula had combined her love of cats and superpowers and can’t wait to read more of her Kitty books.

We enjoyed listening to the new Julia Donaldson book ‘The Magic Feather’. We tried to write our own simple version of the story, recalling the beginning, middle and end of the story.

In Maths, we have been learning how to count in steps of 2, 5 and 10. We have been adding equal groups and have been introduced to the multiplication.

In Art, we enjoyed looking at different flowers and having a go at sketching them. We learnt how to use watercolour paint and painted the flowers carefully. We then went on to make our own magnifying glass and minibeast to add to our picture. We think they look amazing!

In History, we looked back at the amazing Artemis II space mission, launching the Orion spacecraft into space carrying four astronauts on a journey around the moon and back to Earth for the first time in over a century. We learnt so many facts about the journey, spacecraft, what the crew did and the problems they encountered. We listed the facts we could recall and turned ourselves into mini astronauts! The following week we learnt about the amazing American Apollo 11 mission, where three astronauts flew to the moon, and two of the astronauts walked on the moon. We loved recalling so many facts about their mission.

We then moved on to finding out about the first ever Olympic Games in Olympia in Greece. We loved hearing all about the first sports, including running, discuss and chariot racing. The one thing we found most fascinating was the outfits they wore, or didn’t wear!

In RE, we have learnt about different religions, special places of worship and festivals. We focused on Christianity this half-term and enjoyed sharing simple stories from the holy book, the Bible. We found the stories intriguing and particularly enjoyed the miracles!

In Art, we used clay to make a little feather to accompany our Magic Feather stories. We used tools to make imprints, adding detail and then painted them.

In PE, we have loved our swimming lessons with Mrs Halliday and Freya. We have learnt to get in and out of the pool safely, float and swim on our backs. We have been practising our different strokes, as well as launching off like a rocket from the side and jumping in!

In Art, we explored the painting technique ‘pointillism’ further after we made our super rainbows last half term. We drew our own super butterflies, adding details to their symmetrical wings. We used the cotton buds to make little dots close together to appear blended when looking at them from afar. We can’t wait to see them on our windows soon!

We have loved exploring plant growth so much that we decided to share a story in English all about a little seed, ‘The Bad Seed’. He was a good sunflower seed, who turned very naughty! We tried hard to imagine being naughty, but managed to come up with some ideas of very cheeky things we would do if we were a bad seed. Not to be repeated at home!

Finally, we joined up with Reception and Form II to transform into crazy frogs for our Summer Show ‘Croak’. We danced, acted and learnt crazy dance moves, much to their delight! We warmed up our vocals with Mrs Wilson, and were even presented with lovely notes and bracelets from our friends to congratulate each other on our performances. Well done girls, you were truly amazing!

What an action-packed half-term in Form One! Enjoy the sunshine girls. See you in June!
