St Hilda’s Harpenden, Nursery News

This half-term our topic work has centred around the them of ‘People Who Help Us’. We began our topic thinking about the Teachers who help us at school and have loved re-enacting our daily routines in our role play classroom. We have also enjoyed taking on the role of a Vet in our outdoor role play area and have been very thoughtful looking after poorly pets. Later in the half-term we learnt about Doctors and Nurses and the important work that they do. During this topic we considered ways that we could stay healthy and decided that eating well and taking exercise were good things for us to do. In a maths sorting exercise we thought carefully about the food that were ‘treats’, those that were ‘healthy’ and those that were ‘staple foods’.

Our next topic about ‘People Who Help Us’ was to consider the work that refuse collectors do. We knew that it is important to recycle different materials and had a super fun Welly Walk collecting ‘rubbish’ that had blown all around the school. Once collected, we sorted it by type and then put it all in the correct recycling bins. Great job on helping to save the planet Nursery!

To support our learning about Dentists we visited the Wayside Dental Practice. On arrival we met Amit who told us all about the magic number ‘2’. We learnt that we must brush our teeth 2 times each day, in the morning and before bed. Amit told us that we must brush for 2 minutes. The final magic number 2 meant that we must go the the dentist twice each year. Amit used a super sized toothbrush and set of teeth to show us how to brush our teeth. Before we left we spent some time in Amit’s room and saw the big chair and the dental instruments he used. Amit was very kind and gave us all a book called ‘I can Brush My Teeth’ and a ‘Mini Monster’ tooth brushing kit. Thank you Wayside Dental Practice for teaching us so much about oral hygiene!

Our last week of half-term was very exciting with our final topic Fire Officers. On Thursday at 10am we heard a noise outside and realised that the fire service had brought along an appliance to show us. It was so exciting! We listened carefully to the Fire Officers telling us all about the work they do and the tools and equipment that they keep on the engine. Some of us dressed up in the big helmet and gloves and all of us got to climb high up into the cab of the fire appliance and look at all the equipment in there. We took turns to squirt the hose onto the field and squealed with delight as the water shot right across the field. What a super finale to the first half-term of our topic work on ‘People Who Help Us’. Thank you to the Fire Service who gave up their valuable time to come and teach us so much about their important work.

We have loved learning about this topic and next term we shall explore it further learning about the Police, Builders, Opticians, and Postal worker.
