Here at St Hilda’s School Reception Class we have had another fun packed and busy term. Our Topic this term has been ‘Our Town ‘ which has led us to having lots of interesting conversations and adventures in and around Harpenden. We began by working out that some of the class live in Harpenden but we all travel to Harpenden every day to come to St Hilda’s. We looked at lots of the different buildings and facilities in Harpenden. We realised that there were detached houses, semi-detached houses, terraced houses, bungalows and flats where people could live. We also noticed that there were still lots of other buildings in Harpenden. We thought of shops, hairdressers, coffee shops, garages, swimming pools, sports centres and the library. We decided that Harpenden was a busy and bustling place with so many interesting places to go to.
We then decided to investigate what people could do in their spare time to relax and have fun. We realised that there are many ‘Green Spaces’ in Harpenden. These are places that are not built up where people can walk, run, play games or sport and enjoy nature. One Wednesday morning we put on our wellies and coats and set off to explore one of Harpenden’s lovely green spaces. We invited Form III to join us to take Maisie (Mrs Johnstone’s dog) for a walk along the Nickey Line. We had a super walk enjoying being outside in the fresh air, splashing in puddles, spotting wildlife and taking it in turns to hold Maisie’s lead.

Our next adventure was after we had been talking about modes of transport used in Harpenden. Mr Collins very kindly drove us from school to Harpenden train station in the minibus. Once we reached the station we bought tickets and boarded the 9.52am train to St Albans! We alighted the train at St Alban’s and spent some time interviewing the station staff about their jobs, exploring the station and having a drink and snack before catching the 10.48am train from platform 4 back to Harpenden. We saw a few parents from school on our travels as they were also catching the train but for them to go into London to their offices to work.

All in all it has been a great term so far!
