Form One Website News Autumn 2 2025
We have enjoyed another busy half-term in Form One. Have a look at a snapshot of the things we have been learning about.
In Science, we have continued to study animals and enjoyed trying to recall some different animal groups. We learnt about reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish and mammals and sorted the animals according to their differences. We then went on to thinking of other ways we can sort animals and discovered we can group them by their diet. We found out about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We noticed that animals’ teeth and jaws are different according to the food they eat and also their poo is different! We were delighted to make some pretend animal poo and included either bones, seeds and leaves or all three according to their diet! We discussed how we can sort animals according to which habitat it lives in, including polar regions, oceans, urban, woodland, desert and many more. We explored our school grounds to see how many different habitats we could see and which animals might live there.
In English, we have been working hard to improve our letter formation and have focused on ladder letters and one-armed robot letters so far. We can already see our handwriting improving. We loved focusing on Fairy Tales in English and enjoyed reading so many new versions of traditional classics. We even helped the Ugly Duckling to feel good about himself again. We celebrated Fairy Tale Day, dressing up as our favourite book characters, writing our own fairy tale and acting it out!
In Maths, we have moved on from number to addition and subtraction. We have been using the cherry models and bar models to help us work out tricky problems, including swapping the numbers around, swapping the signs around and missing numbers too. We are really gaining confidence using our fingers to help with our maths too.
We then moved onto 2D and 3D shapes, focusing on their properties. We went on a 3D shape hunt and enjoyed making lots of 3D shapes with construction kits. Can you remember the tricky 3D shape names?
Mr Sayers popped into the classroom to give out some of his extra special Head Teacher’s Certificates for our hard work and effort.
In History, we loved finding out the real reason we celebrate Firework’s Night with fireworks; Guy Fawkes! We watched a short story about how the plot was hatched and then acted out the story together. We then ordered the story using our historical knowledge and some of even tried to write the story using our super memories!
In Art, we loved using our amazing colour mixing skills to paint our beautiful clay faces. We noticed how much easier we seem to find it to make brown now, using the three primary colours!
We enjoyed finding out about a little girl’s first Guy Fawkes Night. We loved seeing the York Experience, where actors pretended to be Guy Fawkes showing us his real-life home and the school he attended. We went on to look at fireworks, focusing on their shapes in the sky. We sketched our own fireworks and used wax crayon to colour them. We then washed over them using blue ink for the night sky and loved the fact that the wax crayon pushed the ink off!
In Woodland Learning, we donned our waterproof clothes and ventured onto our very soggy field to have the best time exploring leaves. We tried to find leaves of different shapes, colours and size according to our scavenger hunt sheets. We then tried to identify the leaves using the scientific names. We had so much fun in the mud and rain!
We enjoyed one snowy day in November, and quickly made snowflakes to decorate the classroom.
In Design and Technology, we loved studying photographs of our homes and tried so hard to make our houses using collage materials.
In December, we noticed a few different Christmas activities creeping into our normal days! We made a huge paper chain with our friends, extending the length of the classroom. We used our sewing skills to make a Christmas decoration, made our own pretend cracker, painted a super Christmas card for our family, visited an amazing Christmas gift room, had a good old-fashioned party with a surprise visitor and so much more!
We invited our Mums, Dads, Grandparents and Nannies into the classroom to share our lovely work before it went home for Christmas.
Phew! What a busy six weeks. You have worked so hard girls. Have a wonderful Christmas with your families. See you in the New Year!
