Reception News Autumn Term

Here in St Hilda’s School Harpenden Reception Class we have been having a fabulous first term.  Since September our levels of independence have come on in leaps and bounds. We can all follow the daily classroom routines of looking after our own belongings, following instructions, navigating our way around school amongst many other things. We are happy in both our work and play.

During Literacy we have all learnt to recognise and say at least 42 sounds. We then began to blend these sounds together to read words and we all take reading home to practise with our families each night. Some of the stories we are beginning to read are very funny and make us giggle.  We are also using our sound skills to  break down words in order to be able to write them. This takes a lot of thought as we have to remember to form our letters correctly which we have been learning to do during our handwriting lessons.

We really enjoyed both watching and listening to some fireworks on the board and decided to write our own Fireworks Sounds Poems. We thought about different words to describe the sounds that a firework makes such as

Pop

Weeeeee

Bang

Boom

Wizzzzzz

Sparkle

Zoom

We each worked very hard to hear the correct sounds in these words and wrote them as a poem. We also used paint and chalks to create some marvellous pieces of artwork.

This term we also had our first turn to join in with Outdoor Explorers.  It was a rather wet and muddy day but we dressed up in our warm and waterproof clothes and put on our wellies. Mrs Bugryniec set us the task of finding all sorts of different shapes, colours and sizes of leaves. We had great fun exploring and comparing our leaves.

Key Stage Two Taster Day
Her Next Chapter
Every great story evolves — and in their KS2 years at St Hilda’s, girls write their most exciting chapter yet.
Our girls are challenged, supported and inspired as they step into a learning environment designed to stretch their thinking and spark their ambition. They are known, encouraged and celebrated not just for who they are now, but for the story they are shaping for the future.
With specialist teaching, rich opportunities in and beyond the classroom, and a community that nurtures both resilience and joy, every girl discovers more about her strengths, her interests and her potential.
Come and experience it for yourself at our KS2 Taster Day — a chance for your daughter to begin her next chapter at St Hilda’s.
