Form One Website News Autumn 1 2025

Welcome to our first website news in Form One! We began the year by thinking about how we have changed from Reception girls to Form One girls. We enjoyed the story ‘Sticks’, by Diane Alber, which told the tale of a lolly who melted and became something new. We made our own Form One lolly and can’t wait to see how we will change over the next year!

In Science, we are learning about Ourselves.  We have focused on our facial features, and their functions. We then learnt all about our five senses, and which part of the body is associated with each sense. We then moved on to discovering more about what is inside our body, including learning about our bones and main organs. We learnt how to use scientific labels, as well as developing our scientific enquiring minds using real life observations, videos, photographs and non-fiction books.

In Maths, we have enjoyed learning more about numbers. We have been practising our counting skills, forwards and backwards. We have been using mathematical language, including greater than, less than, more, fewer and equal to. We have been adding two numbers together, using our amazing fingers, and counters and tens frames. We have been introduced to cherry models and bar models, and have used them to work out ways to make different amounts.

In Art, we have been learning about colours and colour mixing. We loved listening to the colour mixing story, ‘Mixed’, by Arree Chung, and used the primary colours to make the secondary colours. We used them to paint our own picture. We went on to study our faces and use our colour mixing skills to paint our portraits. We decided to use paper for our hair and clothes, to add some more interest. We think we look great!

The following week we were feeling brave, and got out the clay! We used the clay to make our own face portraits, using a mixture of clay and water to make ‘slip’ to stick on our features. We can’t wait to paint them once they are dry.

In History, we have been learning about our own history. We looked back to when we were babies and compared what we could do then to what we can do now. We have been thinking about our family history and took time to make our own family tree, including different generations. We moved onto looking at different homes in the past, and noticed some of the features of our own homes were from the Victorian times. We concluded that life was a lot harder a hundred years ago!

We are enjoying getting to know each other even better through our focused Show and Tell sessions. We listen really carefully and often have super questions to ask afterwards. We can’t wait to hear more of them. What can you remember about our friends?

In English, we have been busy learning new sounds in Phonics, practising our writing skills, improving our comprehension skills using Rex the Retriever Dog to help us gather the information from the stories, and so much more! We loved watching the thought-provoking wordless story ‘I walk with Vanessa’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MA9U_11iF4c) and thinking of ways we can be kind to each other. We decided complimenting each other was a lovely thing to do, so we thought of our own compliments and sent them to each other on pretend phones in a text message. What a lovely thing to receive!

To end the half-term and to bring the next part of our Science work to life, we visited Hertfordshire Zoo. We bravely crept around Dinosaur World, before jumping on the train to be terrified by the Velociraptors! We then ventured into the main zoo to be delighted by such a wide range of animals, including lions, jaguars, sun bears, goat, wallabies, emus, tortoises, porcupines, crocodiles, snakes and so much more! We loved meeting Becky, the Zoo Keeper, who introduced us to the gibbons. We learnt about the differences between monkeys and apes, looked at real skulls and tested our strength to see how we compared against the monkeys and apes! We took place in a super workshop, looking at ways to group animals including mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians. We became detectives trying to work out which animals belongs in each group. We finished the day with a quick tour of the birds, comparing our arm stretch to the wingspan of different birds.

We ended our trip with a relaxing sleep on the coach on the way home. Just what we all needed!

On Friday, we enjoyed a wonderful Harvest Service together, singing beautifully. We said a sad goodbye to the lovely Mr Nick, surprising him with a homemade card and a few familiar faces!

Phew! What a busy half-term and that was just a snippet of our learning. Have a super half-term holiday everyone.
