Form One Website News Spring 2 2026
We have enjoyed another busy half-term in Form One, with lots of exciting learning.
In Science, we enjoyed carrying out simple experiments using different materials. We tested different ways to melt ice to help little toys to escape, and discovered that the sun and salt help ice to melt the quickest. We also tested different materials to see which ones sink and float, and we tested which materials would make the best waterproof material for a coat in the rain.
We learnt about the water cycle and ventured out to find the biggest puddle on the playground. We chalked around the puddle, and waited to see what would happen to it over a few days. We were delighted to see that the water had evaporated by the warm spring sun!
Our favourite experiment was to find the best material to protect a real egg from breaking when we dropped it from a height! We worked in pairs to cover eggs in various materials, and then climbed onto the table to test them. Three pairs managed to keep the eggs from cracking! Can you remember which materials worked best to protect the eggs?
In Art, we travelled to Japan in our imaginations and drew the most beautiful blue and white vases. We painted spring blossom in them and gave them to our wonderful Mums for Mother’s Day.
In English, we enjoyed sharing posters we had made to inspire the Reception girls. We took part in our amazing Class Assembly, showcasing our singing, artwork and acting skills!
We celebrated World Book Day together, wearing our favourite book character costume, visiting the Book Fayre with Mrs Balcombe, and heading to the Book Swap organised by FOSH. We loved choosing two new books to take home.
In Computing, we enjoyed learning about coding with Miss Smith. We used the Bee Bot programmable toys, giving them directions to reach different places on the Bee Bot mats. We loved using the Bee Bot app on the iPads too.
In Mathematics, we enjoyed learning new skills, including how to weigh objects using balancing scales and how to compare lengths of objects and measure with a ruler!
In Design and Technology, we learnt how to make moving pictures using simple mechanisms. We used a slider technique to make The Gingerbread Man move across a field. We then used the skills we had learnt to design our own moving Easter cards for our family.
In History, we learned about an amazing woman Amelia Earhart and her incredible flying adventures. We were lucky to be able to visit RAF Hendon to see such a huge range of aeroplanes and helicopters. We learnt about monoplanes, biplanes, triplanes and planes through the ages. We took part in a super workshop ‘Fantastic Flight’ and of course, explored the brilliant aeroplane climbing frame before lunch!
We ended our super Focused Show and Tell sessions with a visit from Jen, a trainee paramedic. We loved hearing about her job and hope that we can be as amazing as she is when we are older.
We enjoyed another super Outdoor Explorer session with Mrs Bugryniec. We enjoyed making little characters using sticks, and then worked really well in small groups to build homes for Stick Man and his family.
We were delighted to be invited into Form IV to meet Miss Sewell and her class. They had been writing stories based on The Tunnel, by Anthony Browne. We enjoyed listening to the girls’ stories and hope that we can write stories as good as theirs when we are older.
Well done girls! You have been so busy this half-term. We hope you have super holidays, and a relaxing and Happy Easter with your family. See you in April!
