Key Stage 1

Girls are introduced to more structured learning, together with an increase in specialist teaching, lessons and the introduction of a wider selection of clubs and activities.

A Nurturing and Structured Environment

At St Hilda’s Harpenden, Key Stage 1 marks an important transition from the Early Years into a more structured and academically focused environment. While the curriculum becomes more formal, we maintain a nurturing atmosphere where each girl feels supported, valued and confident to explore her abilities. Our approach ensures that pupils develop independence, resilience and a love of learning from an early stage.

Broad and Balanced Curriculum

The curriculum is carefully designed to provide breadth and balance, covering core subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science, alongside a rich programme of Humanities, Creative Arts and Physical Education. Specialist teaching enhances the learning experience, allowing pupils to benefit from subject expertise in areas such as Music, Languages and Sport. This not only deepens understanding but also helps to spark curiosity and enthusiasm across a wide range of disciplines.

Personal Development and Wellbeing

We place strong emphasis on the personal development and wellbeing of every pupil. Through pastoral care, form time and dedicated wellbeing initiatives, girls are encouraged to develop confidence, kindness and a strong sense of self. They are supported in building positive relationships, understanding emotions and developing the social skills needed to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.

Enrichment and Co-Curricular Opportunities

Beyond the classroom, Key Stage 1 pupils at St Hilda’s benefit from an extensive range of clubs and activities designed to complement their academic learning. From creative arts and drama to sports and academic clubs, these opportunities allow girls to discover new interests and talents. Participation in co-curricular activities also fosters teamwork, leadership and a sense of community.

Preparation for the Next Stage

By the end of Key Stage 1, pupils are well prepared for the challenges of the next stage of their education. They leave with strong foundational skills, a growing sense of independence and a genuine enthusiasm for learning, ensuring a smooth and confident transition into Key Stage 2.
