A Calm and Positive Start to the Day
At St Hilda’s Harpenden, each day begins with a warm and welcoming start, helping girls to settle quickly and feel ready for the day ahead. Morning routines are carefully structured to build independence, from organising belongings to making choices about lunch, while also fostering a sense of responsibility and belonging within the classroom.
Engaging and Purposeful Learning
Throughout the morning, pupils take part in a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities. Communication, Language and Literacy sessions develop early reading, writing and speaking skills, while Mathematics activities build confidence with numbers and problem-solving. Lessons are designed to be interactive and enjoyable, encouraging curiosity and active participation.
The Importance of Play and Exploration
Play is a vital part of the Pre-Prep experience. Dedicated playtimes, both with peers and the wider school, support social development, teamwork and creativity. Whether indoors or outdoors, girls are encouraged to explore, imagine and collaborate, helping to build confidence and strong friendships.
Creative and Physical Development
Activities such as PE, Music and ‘Busy Fingers’ provide opportunities for creative expression and physical development. These sessions help to refine coordination, develop fine motor skills and encourage self-expression, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.
Afternoon Learning and Discovery
Afternoons are centred around topic-based learning, allowing girls to explore themes across the seven areas of learning, including Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. This integrated approach helps pupils make meaningful connections and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
A Reflective End to the Day
The day concludes with story time, offering a calm and reflective moment before home time. This daily routine not only nurtures a love of reading but also provides a gentle transition from school to home, ensuring that each girl leaves feeling happy, confident and fulfilled.
