Nursery News 6th March 2020

6th March 20

Welcome back to a fun packed week in Nursery.  We began the week by playing a flying spaceship game with Mrs Holdstock and making simple repeating patterns with shapes (Maths) and colours in Busy Fingers.  The Nursery girls also read their core reading books with Mrs Weir.  They enjoyed answering questions relating to the text and pictures in the books and some girls were able to spot rhyme and continue rhyming strings and alliterations (Literacy, CL)!!  WOW!!

Our topic this week is Birds (UW), so we started off by reading and acting out the story ‘Owl Babies’.  We learnt to join in with the repeated refrains as a group and used our loud voices to perform the speaking parts (CL, Literacy).

On Tuesday morning we were very lucky and met a wonderful lady called Kristina Stephenson.  We found out that she is an author and she introduced us to the characters in her super books! We learnt some songs and heard some stories and had a fantastic time (CL, PD, Literacy, EAD)!

We also had a lovely outdoor ChIL where we made bird feeders with cheerios and pipe cleaners, sprinkled food for the birds around our outdoor classroom and used tick lists and binoculars to record and spot the birds flying around us and in the trees in the grounds (KU, PD).

On Wednesday morning we had an amazing Busy Fingers session!! The girls and boys were so engaged in all of the learning with the adults and independently that we had an extended session (PD, CL, EAD)!  What a super start to the day!

After Busy Fingers we split into Nursery and Pre-Nursery groups and had our phonics and listening lessons.  The Pre-Nursery group went on a listening walk and heard an enormous number of sounds around the school – hopefully they can now use those fantastic listening skills in the classroom too (Literacy, CL).  The Nursery girls learnt their new phonics sound ‘d’.  After listening to and singing the song and identifying the objects beginning with the sound ‘d’ in the story they then had some practice of writing the sound on the whiteboard with the correct formation!!  So grown up (Literacy, CL, PD)!!

Thursday was World Book Day and we had so much fun!! Everyone looked absolutely amazing in their book character costumes.  We had a bumble bee, a couple of Peter Rabbits, an Alice in Wonderland, lots of witches and a crocodile amongst other things! How fantastic!  We were invited to go all the way up to the Seagull Studio to join the rest of the school for an assembly (PSE, CL, Literacy).  We were given the chance to show off our outfits and also to see everybody else’s outfits!

On Friday we had a trip down to Lydekker Park in Harpenden to see if we could spot some birds and other wildlife (UW, PSE, PD).  We walked there brilliantly and saw a lot of birds in the trees and on the ground.  We made some pipe cleaner bird feeders and made some rubbings of the bark on the trees (KU).  We also drew some pictures of all sorts of different flowers that we found around the park (EAD).  We finished off our trip with a song about birds too (EAD).  We then had a yummy snack and made our way back to school.  What a lovely way to finish off the week!

Next week our topic is baby animals.  Have a super weekend!
