Nursery News Week ending 10th January 2020

10th January 20

Welcome everyone!!

We thoroughly enjoyed welcoming back our Nursery children this morning from their Christmas break and we were also delighted to welcome some of our new Pre-Nursery children for their first morning at St. Hilda’s.  Everyone was so brave and joined in with all the activities.

We started the morning with some exciting Busy Fingers activities (PD).

Mrs Radgman then introduced our new topic of ‘Traditional Tales’ to the class.  We heard the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and pretended we were Jack chopping down the beanstalk. We also tried to predict the story line (CL and Literacy).   After a free flow ChIL session we had some yummy snacks and enjoyed some simple songs and dancing (EAD, PD).

On Tuesday morning we had our first phonics session of the year.  We played a listening game to help us remember how to listen after such a long holiday!  We played a traffic light game and pretended to drive our cars around the playground.  Our teachers were very impressed at how well we were listening and driving (CL, PD)!

After a free flow ChIL session we had a snack and then Mrs Houten had some very exciting certificates to give out.  Lots of us had achieved our Next Steps targets (PSE).  We are very proud of how hard the children have been working to achieve their goals.   We also enjoyed a music session with Mrs Houten before our Library time with our cuddly friends (EAD, CL).

On Wednesday in Busy Fingers we were joined by Mrs Snelling and we worked hard on making our fingers and hands stronger with the activities at the tables.  We twisted and drilled, threaded and painted (PD)!!

After we had looked at the jobs board and what the plan of the day was, we listened to the story of ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’.   We talked about how to plant the seed, how to care for it and how it grew (UW) in the story.  We also looked at some of the structure of a book, including the front cover, the blurb and the back cover and talked about sequencing the story.

In Outdoor ChIL we practised our counting, gross motor movements and friendship skills (M, PD, PSE).

We had a fantastic music session on Wednesday morning with Mrs Lipman! We sang songs, played instruments and used lots of actions to help us with the words.  Loulou even gave us a solo rendition of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ (EAD)!!

During our ChIL and Busy fingers sessions on Thursday we practised our writing skills and holding our pens with the correct grip (CL).  We separated and sorted a variety of beans using the tweezers and spoons (PD, M) and used the wooden blocks and cars to make a town and roads for the cars to drive around (PD, EAD).

On Friday we went on our first welly walk of the year (PD)!  We found out that Peter Rabbit had hidden us some clues around the school and we had to work out what story the clues were from.  We were very clever and realised that the clues were from Jack and the Beanstalk.  We then acted out the story, climbing like Jack, stomping like the Giant, throwing the beans away like Jack’s mother and roaring “Fie, Fi, Fo, Fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman” (CL, EAD)!

At the end of our welly walk we found a mystery bag! The bag contained some beans!  We decided it would be fun to plant the beans and to see if we could grow our own beanstalks (KU)(although some of us were adamant that we would never climb a beanstalk in case we encountered a giant!!)

We hope you have a wonderful weekend, full of fun and some rest time too!

Next week we will be focusing on The Ugly Duckling as part of our traditional tales topic.
