We began our week on Tuesday thinking about our new topic, ‘The Life Cycle of a Butterfly’ and ‘The Life Cycle of a Frog’. In ‘Busy Fingers’ we coloured in pictures of butterflies and caterpillars. We also tried to follow repeating patterns colouring in the circles on caterpillar’s bodies, (Maths and PD). We have also been working on our puzzle skills, completing life cycle puzzles and our number recognition and formation painting water over chalk numbers, (Maths and PD).
We also tried to use our strong fingers to peg different types of fruits and food onto the caterpillars tummy, counting them as we went along, (Maths and PD).
In our adult-led activity we used a story sack to read and act out ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, by Eric Carle. We were able to tell our teachers how the tiny seed changed and eventually became a butterfly. We then looked at the butterfly that had pushed its way out of the cocoon and realised that both wings had the same pattern on. We learnt a very long word that explained this, symmetry, (Maths). We then painted our very own butterflies and then folded them over so each side was the same, (EAD). They look amazing!
After a lovely ChIL in the sunshine we went to the library for a story with Peter rabbit and read the star of the day news.
We worked hard on our new topic on Wednesday morning. Some of us cut out the parts of a frog and then used split pins to connect them together to make a jumping frog, (PD and EAD).
Some of us drew, cut and painted circles to make the body of the Hungry Caterpillar for our new display, (EAD and PD). Quite a few of us used clay to roll into frog spawn and then tried to make frogs out of clay too, (EAD, UW and PD).
In our Jolly Phonics lesson today we learnt our new sound ‘j’. It’s a tricky one as some of us thought it looked very like ‘i’. We identified items in the story that started with ‘j’ and sung a funny song about jelly and jam! We then worked in two groups. One group played the ‘Listening game’ and one group played Phonics Bingo, matching letter sounds to our bingo cards. It was great fun. After all that concentration we had a quick bit of movement dancing to ‘The Dinosaur Stomp’.
In ChIL we explored butterflies and bugs using magnifying glasses. We also tried to draw the different creatures and looked in information books to learn about them, (UW, PD and Literacy). We even found one in Tilly’s hair!
We had a quick Music lesson exploring rhythm and beat using lots of different instruments and then we began to learn the songs and actions for our summer show.
In the afternoon with Mrs Radgman we watched the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ on the smart board. We talked all about the fruits that the caterpillar ate. We then made a fruit salad, peeling and cutting the fruit with our strong fingers, (PD).
On Thursday morning we worked hard on our fine motor skills trying to dress the dollies from the baby clinic in baby grows. We have been finding this tricky, but worked really hard on this useful skill, (PD).
We also used our strong fingers to fold paper back and forth to make springy legs for some frogs. They look really funny!
In our French lesson we learnt to sing ‘Five Little Speckled Frogs’ in French and enjoyed counting to five in French and jumping into the water, (Maths, CL and UW). We also read ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and learnt the names of the fruits in French and counted in French.
In the afternoon with Mrs Radgman we read the story ‘The Princess and the Frog’. We listened well and helped to recall the story using some lovely story language,(Literacy). We then made some lily pads for the new display sewing wool around cardboard lily pads, (EAD and PD).
On Friday we enjoyed exploring jelly with tadpoles in, (UW and EAD). We had a great time and got super messy!
We also finished the lily pads for our display, adding beautiful pink flowers and Thea painted some lovely textured grass for the back ground, (EAD and PD).
In our Outdoor Learning session we went to look at the tadpoles in the school pond. We talked all about the life cycle and then drew amazing pictures of tadpoles, (EAD, UW and PD).
We had a playtime with the big girls in the school, getting some of us ready for our move to Reception next year, (PSE).
After a quick Music session with Mrs Harte learning more of our show songs, we finished a very busy week with our ‘Star of the Day’ news.
Next week we are thinking about ‘Baby Animals’ and we have our exciting zoo trip on Thursday. Have lovely weekends.
